APT Taipei 2024: Side Event Action from Day 5 of the Series

Yu Tang Wang Goes Back-to-Back-to-Back Claiming Three Series Titles

While it doesn’t happen all that often, occasionally a player runs so hot during a series they claim multiple titles. So far this series there have been three players who have been in the hot seat with Australia’s Mark Furniss, Japan’s Yuji Watanabe and Singapore’s Bao Qing Ho all claiming two apiece.

Furniss won Event #5: Limit Triple Draw Lowball Mix and Event #25: 8 Game, Watanabe won two Omaha events ¬– #2 & #35 – and Ho went one better, winning two Hyper Turbo High Rollers – #28 & #36. Ho even went back-to-back, which was even more impressive, especially considering the Singaporean did the same back during August’s APT Incheon 2023.

However, Taiwan’s Yu Tang Wang has upped the ante, going back-to-back-to-back to claim an impressive three series titles. Wang followed up his maiden APT title victory in Event #34: Limit Triple Draw 2-7 by immediately winning a second in Event #40: 9 Game, and then pushing the envelope further, taking down Event #45: Turbo NL Single Draw Mix later the same day.

Wang now joins an exclusive club of 13 featuring the likes of the UK’s Sam Razavi, South Korea’s Soojo Kim, Norway’s Kai Paulsen, Mongolia’s Battulga Janag, and the Philippines’ Lester Edoc, and Mike Takayama who can boast triple series title wins.

Razavi holds the record for most title won in a series, claiming an impressive four trophies back during the 2015 APT Cebu, meaning Wang needs to win two more trophies over the next week to earn a place in the APT record books.

The Taiwanese player saw off challenges from a 35-strong field (32 unique) to claim victory in the TWD 10,000 Event 40: 9 Game, defeating Australia’s John Caridad heads-up to take a TWD 111,155 (~USD 3,525) top prize, with the Aussie taking TWD 77,000 (~USD 2,440) for his runner-up finish.

Mark Furniss also came close to claiming his third series title, cashing in third place for TWD 49,000 (~USD 1,550), with a total of five players cashing for a share of the **TWD 302,155 (~USD 9,570) prize pool and the tournament paying out as follows:

The Taiwanese player padded out his bankroll with a further TWD 71,206 (~USD 2,260), with Cooper collecting TWD 49,000 (~USD 1,550) for his runner-up finish.
