Japan's Daisuke Ogita Wins APT Main Event Claiming Taiwan's Richest-Ever Top Prize

TAIPEI, TAIWAN, March 9, 2024 – The richest poker tournament ever to play out in Taiwan has a champion, with Japan's Daisuke Ogita triumphing over a 1,182-strong (737 unique) field to claim the largest first-place prize ever to be awarded in the region – a mammoth TWD 12,944,020 (~409,730) top prize!

Playing out at the tournament tables of the Chinese Texas Hold'em Poker Club (CTP) Asia Poker Arena, the Final Day of the APT Taipei 2024 TWD 70,000 Main Event saw the final nine players return to action, all looking to claim the coveted Gold Lion APT Main Event trophy.

Ogita came into the final table with the third largest stack, with France's Safwane Bahri returning in pole position with 25 percent of the chips in play.

However, Bahri's stack trended downwards while Ogita's grew, and the Japanese player scored the first elimination of the day – sending Singapore's Steve Ng to the rail in ninth place – to edge into a chip lead he would not relinquish.

Ogita elimated five of the eight other finalists on his journey to the title, coming into heads-up against Taiwan's Guo Zhang Xi with over an 8-to-1 chip advantage.

Seven hands later Ogita was hoisting the the award-winning 24K Gold Lion APT Taipei Main Event Trophy, with the final hand encapsulating just how hot he was running; rivering two pair with a dominated hand with all the chips going in pre-flop.

In addition to making his maiden APT title victory one to remember, Ogita also earned a career-best score, climbing five places from #12 to #7 on the Japan All-Time Money List, bringing his total live winnings up to over USD 1.8 million.

So how was Ogita feeling after claiming the largest cash of his poker career?

"Fantastic! I can't believe it, it's amazing," an elated Ogita stated in his post match interview.

So how did he rate his first APT experience? Via the aid of a translater the Japanese player confided:

"This is the first APT for me, and I have met many friends here; Asian players are very friendly and enthusiastic," Ogita stated, before going on to acknowledge just how hot he ran.

"I'm worried my plane might crash after winning this award-winning trophy, as I used up so much luck. I'd like to thank my family for letting me be here. To the players, thank you for playing with me, and to all my family and friends in Japan, thank you for watching and cheering for me. It was such a good run."

Kun Sen Cuts Deal to Claim Maiden Live Title in Taiwan's Largest APT Double Stack

Taiwan's Kun Sen won the largest APT Double Stack ever to play out in Taiwan

All the record-setting action was not exclusive to the Main Event, with the largest APT Double Stack ever to play out in Taiwan – the TWD 20,000 Event #90: Double Stack (Plays to 14% ITM) - TWD 7,000,000 GTD – also crowning a champion.

Just 108 players out of a field of 765 entries (468 unique) returned to action for the Double Stack Final Day, all guaranteed a TWD 34,000 (~USD 1,080) share of the TWD 13,356,900 (~USD 425,245) prize pool – the second-richest this event has ever generated.

It was local Kun Sen who claimed the Pewter Lion Silhoutte Trophy and the richest APT Double Stack first place prize ever awarded after cutting an ICM deal with heads-up opponent Chi Jen Chen.

This saw Sen score his maiden live tournament title and a TWD 2,216,900 (~USD 70,515) top prize. Chen banked TWD 1,880,000 (~USD 59,800) for his runner-up finish, earning his second six figure – or five in USD – score of the series after finishing in second place in Event #42 Sunday Super Stack.

Japan's Toshio Kataoka rounded out the podium, collecting TWD 1,098,000 (~USD 34,925) for third place.

Four-time bracelet winner Bradley Ruben made his APT final table debut, earning a TWD 497,000 (USD 15,800) pay day and his third APT career cash, with the final table paying out as follows:

Other notables to run deep included Flight A frontrunner Yu Hoi Chan (14th for TWD 127,000), Taiwan's Feng Wen Chen (22nd for TWD 86,000), reigning APT Summer Series Da Nang Main Event champion Shixiang Khoo (27th for TWD 73,000), start-of-day chip leader Jose Colada (43rd for TWD 48,000), and former APT Manila 2019 Main Event champion Yohn Paredes (53rd for TWD 48,000).

APT High Roller Crushes Guarantee With TWD 21.7M (~USD 690K) Prize Pool; Hong Kong's Leo Pang Leads

The last of the series three major marquee events, the TWD 150,000 Event #101: APT High Roller - TWD 11,000,000 GTD left the guarantee in the dust, drawing a field of 160 entries (114 unique) to generate a sizable TWD 21,728,000 (~USD 690,940) prize pool.

The eventual winner will walk away with the largest APT High Roller top prize of the APT new era – a chunky TWD 5,053,000 (~USD 160,685).

It is Hong Kong's Leo Pang who will be returning in the tournament top spot after bagging a sizable stack of 1,237,000 – valued at 77 big blinds – after the sixteen 40-minute levels played out.

Pang was the only player to break the seven-figure chip barrier, with Japan's Yosuke Nakazawa his next closest rival, returning with 993,000 in chips (62 big blinds).

Taiwanese poker professional Chen An Lin bagged big and will be bringing 935,000 bullets to fire at the opposition when play resumes for the Final Day at 11:15am local time on Sunday, March 10.

Triple bracelet winner Yan Shing "Anson" Tsang also bagged a top ten stack, as did John "Burt" Perry and the Aussie will be hoping to earn his maiden APT title after his deep run in the Main Event.

Just 35 players remain in contention for the trophy and title, although only 23 of them will be making the money, with the top ten stacks as follows:

South Korea's Jeong Yeol Yu Claims Second Mixed Game Series Title in Event #100: Dealer's Choice

Jeong Yeol Yu claims fourth APT title and second series title in Event #100: Dealer's Choice

The inaugural TWD 10,000 Event #100: Dealer's Choice (19 Games) - 7 Max drew a 34-strong field (25 unique) on its APT debut, generating a TWD 293,522 (~USD 9,335) prize pool.

With 19 poker variants to choose from, players were spoilt for choice when deciding what to play, with the player on the button choosing the game every seven hands.

The action played out over twenty-three 25-minute levels, with South Korea's Jeong Yeol Yu proving his mixed-game credentials and claiming a second title of the series.

Yu defeated the Netherlands' Tony Khoang heads-up to take a TWD 108,522 (~USD 3,450) top prize and a fourth career APT title.

Khoang earned TWD 75,000 (~USD 2,385) for his fourth final table appearance of the series, with Japan's Ko Goto coming in third place for TWD 48,000 (~USD 1,525).

Both Australia's Mark Furniss and Taiwan's Yu Sheng Lin made an impressive fifth series final table, with the tournament paying out as follows:
