Main Event Day 1B Draws 175 Entries; India's Phashant Bhutoria Bags Biggest, Lester Edoc Wins 16th APT Title In Single Day High Roller, Two Female APT Champions Crowned In One Day

HANOI, VIETNAM, February 7, 2023 – Action at the APT Hanoi 2023 – partnered with the Vietnam Series of Poker (VSOP) and sponsored by Natural8 – is coming to the boil.

Both the Main Event and the Single Day High Roller – 8 Max pulled in some good numbers, and when you add to that the crowning of two female champions on the same day, you have a recipe for some thrilling poker.

It was the second flight of the ₫25,000,000+2,500,000 Main Event – Day 1B – that garnered the most attention, drawing 175 entries. Combined with the 205 Day 1A entries, that brings the total field up to 380 with Day 1C & 1D still left to play out.

Notables in contention included the UK's Tom Alner and William Kang, the Philippines' David Erquiaga and John Tech, Australia's Aaron Lim, and Russia's Sergey Rybachenko to name but a few.

Several present and past APT champions were also in the running, including APT Philippines 2022 Championship winner Paul Kiem, NLH/PLO Single Day High Roller champion Namhyung Kim, and reigning APT Da Nang Main Event champion Doo Sik Nam.

However, it was India's Phashant Bhutoria the man to finish atop the Day 1B chip counts, concluding play with a stack of 247,500 after the ten 45-minute levels played out.

The hand that catapulted Bhutoria into the chip lead came midway through level nine, where the Indian spiked a set of jacks against the pocket kings of Erquiaga to send the Filipino to the rail.

Vietnam's Victor Em and Phan Dinh Nam rounded out the top three, bagging up stacks of 236,600 and 221,400 respectively, with the top ten Day 1B stacks as follows:

Other notables to bag six-figure stacks included APT Vietnam Ho Chi Minh 2022 Main Event runner-up Ha Van Thien (150,900), Finland's Johan Hirvonen (148,000), the aforementioned Aaron Lim (104,500), and Sergey Rybachenko (101,800).

Doo Sik Nam kept his back-to-back Main Event title dream alive; although it took the South Korean two attempts to find a chip bag Nam concluded play with a stack of 43,800.

Tom Alner was another who also went the distance, although the Brit found himself as one of the shorter stacks on 26,400.

A total of 74 players made the cut to join the 72 Day 1A survivors on Day 2, which plays out at 11am (GMT+7) on Thursday, February 9.

The last two starting flights – Day 1C & 1D – will both run on Wednesday, February 8, starting at 11am and 5pm respectively, both consisting of ten 30-minutes levels apiece.

Philippines' Lester Edoc Wins 16th APT Title In Single Day High Roller

All the action was not limited to the Main Event, with the ₫40,000,000+4,000,000 Event #19 Single Day High Roller - 8 Max also drawing some great numbers.

A total of 61 high rollers (41 unique) hit the felt to compete for the tasty ten-figure ₫2,366,800,000 (~$99,405) prize pool and the field was packed with poker talent.

Notables in the running included several of the Philippines' finest in the form of Lester Edoc, David Erquiaga, Christopher Mateo, and Mike Takayama.

They were joined by the likes of South Korea's Gab Yong Kim, Steve Yea, and Doo Sik Nam, Main Event Day 1A frontrunner Xixiang Luo, Vietnam's Teddy Pham, and India's Kunal Patni to name but a few.

It was Edoc who would emerge on top, with the Filipino pro seizing a chip lead he would not relinquish when play became five-handed.

The two-time former APT Main Event champion put on a dominating final table performance to clinch his 16th APT title, defeating China's Yake Wu to take the ₫689,930,000 (~$28,977) top prize.

Wu received ₫497,030,000 ($20,875) for his runner-up finish, with China's Po Wen Fang rounding out the podium and collecting ₫323,070,000 ($13,569) for third.

China's Xianling Chen Whips Up A Storm In The Tuesday Tempest

Another new addition to the APT schedule, the ₫10,000,000+1,000,000 Event #20 Tuesday Tempest – Single Re-Entry drew 61 entries (54 unique), generating a ₫591,700,000 (~$24,851) prize pool.

It was China's Xianling Chen to claim the prestigious honor of being crowned the inaugural Tuesday Tempest champion, becoming the first female champion of the APT Hanoi 2023 and winning her maiden APT title in the process.

Chen defeated China's Ian Lam heads-up to take the ₫172,470,000 (~$7,244) top prize.

Lam had to settle for the ₫124,260,000 ($5,219) on offer for second place, with the USA's Robert Nemeskeri-Kiss claiming bronze for ₫80,770,000 ($3,392).

India's Nikita Luther Wins Inaugural Super Hold'em Hyper Turbo

India's Nikita Luther claimed her maiden APT title in the inaugural Super Hold'em Hyper Turbo

While India's Nikita Luther narrowly missed out on being crowned the first APT Hanoi 2023 female champion, she did claim the honor of winning the inaugural ₫4,000,000+400,000 Event #22 NLH - Super Holdem (3 hole cards) - Hyper Turbo.

The established poker professional bested an 80-strong (47 unique) field to win the lioness' share of the ₫310,400,000 (~$13,036) prize pool.

Luther defeated Russia's Nikolay Ponomarenko heads-up to claim the ₫85,370,000 (~$3,585) top prize and add a maiden APT title to her list of poker accolades – which already include a World Series of poker bracelet.

This result pushes the New Delhi native up to 15th on the India All-Time Money List, bringing her career tournament winnings up to over $440,500.

Ponomarenko took ₫60,680,000 ($2,549) for his runner-up finish, with Switzerland's Sandro Burkhard receiving ₫39,730,000 ($1,669) for third.

A total of eleven players made the money, with the official eight-handed final table paying out as follows:
