Main Event Flight A Opens With 189 Entries; India's Deepankur Gupta Bags Biggest

PHU QUOC, VIETNAM, November 11, 2024 — The hors d'oeuvre at the APT Phu Quoc 2024—run in partnership with VPT at the Corona Theater located within the luxurious Corona Resort & Casino—have been served and it’s time for the main course, with the opening Flight A of the VND 36M Main Event and it’s juicy VND 25 billion (~USD 1 million) guarantee attracting 189 initial entries (142 unique).

Players battled at the baize over ten 60-minute levels in an attempt to amass a big enough stack to carry them through to Day 2 with 70 of them making the cut. It is India’s Deepankur Gupta leading the charge, bagging up the biggest stack of 307,800.

Gupta was the only player to finish the day on over 300K in chips although Vietnam’s Dong Van Tan came close, concluding the action with 290,500 in chips.

Compatriot Nguyen Trung Quan rounded out the top three stacks, bagging up 243,900 in chips, with APT Manila 2024 Zodiac Classic finalist Charles Pansoy of the Philippines and Aussie tour regular Dylan Foster also finishing in the top ten:

Other notables to fight their way through with six-figure stacks included Taiwan’s Chi Jen “Justin” Chu (147,300), China’s Peng Chen (144,500), Japan’s Motoyoshi Okamura (134,800), and France’s Adrien Favre (122,500).

Other big names and familiar faces to make it through included: South Korea’s Gab Yong Kim (97,600), and Youngshin Im (90,400), Australia’s John “Bert” Perry (90,300), Serbia’s Milos Skrbic (81,200), Bulgaria’s Slaven Popov (80,900), India’s Ankit Ahuja (78,700), Kunal Patni (73,400), and Dhaval Mudgal (51,800), APT Super High Roller finalists Martin Stausholm (51,800), and Julian Warhurst (31,700) and champion Win Meng Tan (23,200) to name but a few.

With three more starting flights left to play out, there are still chances for those unsuccessful in their endeavors to win their way through.

Flight B gets underway at 11am local time (GMT+7) on Tuesday, November 12, with players competing over six 45-minute levels and four 60-minute levels.

The final two starting Flights C & D—both boasting six 30-minute levels and four 40-minute levels each—get underway on Wednesday, November 13, at 11am and 6pm respectively, although late registration remains open until the start of Day 2, which kicks off at 11am on Thursday, November 14.
