TAIPEI, TAIWAN, April 30, 2023 – The APT Taipei 2023 has set the highest of bars to mark the start of the new era, with the record-setting TWD $150,000 APT Super High Roller proving to be the field of dreams for poker rookie Sam Lam.
Playing out at the tournament tables of the brand new CTP Asia Poker Arena – Asia's largest permanent poker room – the conclusion of the first of the Series' three flagship events perfectly encapsulated the thrill of high stakes tournament poker with an underdog story of epic proportions.
The UK's Lam, who has only been playing poker for four months and who previously had just a single four-figure cash on his poker resume, triumphed over a 117-strong field – the largest and richest Super High Roller field in the APT's fifteen-year history.
Lam won the first of the flagship New Era APT lion trophies in spectacular style, defeating seasoned tournament specialist Jun Obara to claim the TWD $3,997,400 (~USD $129,880) top prize.
"I have friends coming in to Taiwan soon for this series, so I flew in to meet them, and decided to jump into this tournament," stated Lam in his post-match winner's interview via the aid of a translator.
Just 23 players remained in contention for the title at the start of Day 2 with only 17 of them able to make the money, with Lam returning second in the chip counts.
"I was hoping to finish in the top five and go from there, I very much wanted to make the final table. I was very surprised to win if I'm honest, I've only been playing for four months," stated a modest Lam.
"My girlfriend has been unsupportive of my poker play, but said she would consider changing her mind if I win something big! I love Taiwan! I love APT! I love CTP!" Lam gushed enthusiasticly just minutes after winning his first major title.
In addition to seeing off Obara's challenge, Lam bested some of the Asia poker circuits top pros on his way to his fairytale win.
Bracelet winner Abhinav Iyer (3rd for TWD $1,755,700), Malaysia's Natalie Teh (6th for $924,700), and cash game crusher James En-Ning Chen (9th for TWD $397,200) were just some of the poker talent who needed to be overcome before Lam could hoist the trophy.
A total of 17 players cashed for a share of the TWD $15,888,600 (~USD $516,160) prize pool, with the final table paying out as follows:

Thailand's Kiwanont Sukhum Takes Down Largest-Ever Mystery Bounty Hunter - TWD $3M GTD - Sponsored by Natural8 for TWD $1.17M (~USD $38K)
Thailand's Kiwanont Sukhum earned a career best score and his second APT title in the record-breaking Mystery Bounty Hunter
Another record-setting APT marquee tournament to play down to an electrifying end was the TWD $16,000 Event #6 Mystery Bounty Hunter - TWD 3,000,000 GTD - Sponsored by Natural8.
It was Thailand's Kiwanont Sukhum who outlasted a record-breaking field of 670 to take home a career-best score of TWD $1,173,100 (~USD $38,100), in addition to claiming his second APT title and an all-new APT trophy to add to his collection.
Sukhum came from behind and overcame a six-to-one chip deficit to beat France's Anthony Cierco in an epic heads-up battle that had the watching rail enthralled.
Cierco came within a card of taking the title, the Frenchman's ace-queen dominating the Thai's ace-ten until Sukhum spiked a miracle ten on the river to spark the comeback.
With the momentum firmly on Sukhum's side, the Frenchman was unable to battle back, moving all in for his last five big blinds with jack-ten, with Sukham making the call with eight-seven suited.
Despite flopping top pair, Cierco could not overcome Sukhum's flopped nut straight and the Frenchman was left to rue what could have been.
Cierco was forced to settle for the TWD $723,600 (~USD $23,500) runner-up prize, while Sukham claimed both the trophy and title.

South Korea's Daewoong Song Claims Silver Lion Trophy in Event #11 Single Day High Roller - 8 Max for TWD $1.83M (~USD $59.6K)

All the high rolling action was not exclusive to the APT Super High Roller, with the TWD $60,000 Event #11 Single Day High Roller – 8 Max attracting a 146-strong field (113 unique).
Some of Asia's best battled to claim their share of the TWD $7,647,480 (~USD $248,600) prize pool, with the tournament playing out over a grueling twenty-eight 30-minute levels.
Notables in the running for the coveted new era APT silver lion high roller trophy included India's Ankit Ahuja, APT Kickoff finalist Gavin Flynn, Event #3 Turbo champion William Lam, Event #5 Omaholic champion Yah Loon Lim, Germany's Kilian Loffler, Singapore's Benjamin Sai, and a plethora of other high rolling talent.
However, all of the above came up short, departing before the money.
It was Daewoong Song who claimed the TWD $1,835,480 ~USD $59,670) top prize, defeating Japan's Marie Kabaki heads-up to add his maiden APT title to his already lengthy poker resume, making a third-best career cash in the process.
Kabaki put up a valient effort, and was rewarded with a TWD $1,246,500 (~USD $40,520) runner-up prize – a career best score by a significant margin.
Hong Kong's Fuk On Wong rounded out the winner's podium, taking a career-best TWD $822,100 (~USD $26,725) for third.

Another single-day event playing down to an exciting end was the TWD $20,000 Event #10 Sunday Super Stack, which drew a 204-strong field (179 unique).
With a meaty TWD $3,561,840 (~USD $115,790) prize pool up for grabs, and only 27 of the field making the money, competition for the cash was fierce.
It was Japan's Ryuichiro Yamakawa the man to take it down, defeating China's Chien-Chih Weng heads-up to claim his maiden APT title, trophy and the TWD $789,040 (~USD $25,650) top prize.
Weng received TWD $532,500 (~USD $17,310) for his runner-up finish, with Japan's Sho Saika bagging bronze and earning TWD $366,500 (~USD $11,915) for third place, with the final table paying out as follows:

Three more APT Taipei 2023 side events are in the books, and three new champions have won themselves a coveted golden lion APT New Era trophy.
It was Taiwan's Yu Lin Wang who is the first of these newly crowned champions, defeating a 208-strong field (168 unique) to claim gold in the TWD $5,000 Event #8 Turbo and take the largest share of the TWD $907,920 (~USD $29,500) prize pool.
Wang defeated Japan's Yoshihito Asakawa heads-up to win his maiden APT title and the TWD $192,020 (~USD $6,240) top prize.
Asakawa received TWD $129,300 (USD $4,200) for his runner-up finish, with Taiwan's King-Chung Wang rounding out the winner's triumvirate and taking TWD $91,200 (~USD $2,960) for third.
