HANOI, VIETNAM, February 11, 2023 – The APT Hanoi 2023 Main Event – partnered with the Vietnam Series of Poker (VSOP) – has a champion, with Vietnam's Hai Nam Hoang making his maiden live tournament title win a memorable one.

Playing out at the tournament tables of the VSOP Poker Club, just eight players out of the 654-strong Main Event field remained in contention at the start of the fourth and final day, all looking to earn their share of the ₫15,859,500,000 (US$666,099) prize pool.

However, after returning with over a third of the chips in play, it would be the start-of-day chip leader Hoang who would emerge the victor

In addition to claiming the APT Main Event trophy, Hoang also locked up a ₫2,794,200,000 (~$117,356) top prize after cutting an ICM deal with heads-up opponent Tuan Tai Nguyen, who received ₫2,100,000,000 (~$88,200) for his runner-up finish.

“This is only my second time playing in an event with such a big field, and to become the champion of a Main Event is a great feeling. I’d like to say a big thank you and I appreciate everything APT and the VSOP have done to make this a great event. It was a pleasure to be here,” said Hoang via the aid of a translator after posing for his obligatory winner's photo.

“I just played the best I could and took it step by step, hoping I could go as deep as I could.”

Hoang's hopes and dreams came true, with this result representing a career-best score. A total of 96 players made the money, with the official eight-handed final table paying out as follows:

Coming into the final table holding a commanding lead, the tournament was Hoang's to lose.

It was not all smooth sailing for the Vietnamese player, however, with Russia's Petr Rudnev going on a rampage to climb from tournament short-stack up to second in the chip counts.

Rudnev took first blood on the second level played, his pocket nines enough to send fellow countryman German Bukharov to the rail in eighth place after the latter moved all-in pre-flop with pocket eights.

Hoang increased his stranglehold with a thrilling double elimination two levels later; the short-stacked Duc Trung Dinh shoved all-in pre-flop with A♥Q♥, Zhao Feng – the field's sole remaining former APT Main Event champion – peeked down to see T♥T♣ and re-shoved, and Hoang woke up with Q♦Q♣.

It was Rudnev who would score the next elimination later that same level after the short-stacked Son Le moved all-in for his last 2 million in chips with K♥8♥ and the Russian woke up with 8♦8♣.

Tuan Tai Nguyen took play three-handed after winning a race with A♥Q♣ against namesake Thanh Hai Nguyen's 5♠5♣.

While Rudnev enjoyed a stint as the tournament top dog when play became three-handed, the Russian began to fade as Hoang regained both the momentum and the chip lead.

Following Rudnev's departure at the hands of Tuan Tai Nguyen to take play heads-up, Hoang had built his stack up to the giddy heights of 17.3 million to Nguyen's 8.6 million.
