HANOI, VIETNAM, May 31, 2023 – It was an action-packed day at the tournament tables of the Grand Loyal Poker Club – located on the second and third floors of the luxurious Grand Vista Hanoi Hotel – with six tournaments running, showcasing some scintillating poker action.
In addition to the final two opening flights of the VND 35,000,000 APT Summer Series Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 Main Event, the Event #27 Single Day High Roller - 8 Max was also in action, drawing a 117-strong field – you can read more on that below.
Then there was the Event #26 Women's Event, two Pot Limit Omaha tournaments – Event #28 Pot Limit Omaha High and Event #30 Omaholic - Sponsored by Natural8 – and also Event #29 Turbo - 8 Max.
MAIN EVENT ACTION
It was the final two opening flights of the VND 35,000,000 Main Event that topped the bill, bringing the number of entries up to 541 with registration remaining open until the start of Day 2.
Flight C of the Main Event got underway at 12pm local time and drew 136 entries (107 unique).
It was Vietnam's Dat Ngo Van the man to top the Flight C chip counts after the ten 30-minute levels played out. Van bagged up a stack of 328,000 – putting him second in the overall chip counts coming into Day 2.
Indonesia's Jhon Hendri bagged the second largest Flight C stack, concluding play with 247,900, which puts him seventh in the overall pecking order.
Japan's Naoto Takeya (202,400) rounded out the top three Flight C stacks, with the top ten as follows:

A total of 66 players made it through from Flight C, with notables to lock up a Day 2 spot including: Vietnam's Bien Mai (91,100), two-time Series title winner Daniel Brugman (88,700), reigning APT Hanoi Main Event champion Hai Nam Hoang (80,400), Hong Kong's Vincent Li (73,600), Australia's Joshua Mccully (60,100), Sweden's Sofia Lovgren Fullmer (52,500), and the newly crowned Superstar Challenge champion Alan Pham (26,000) – although the latter will be returning for Day 2 as one of the shorter stacks.

Vietnam's Pham Duy Anh bagged biggest on Flight D of the Main Event
Flight D saw a further 60 entries (54 unique), with Vietnam's Pham Duy Anh clawing his way to the top of the chip counts.
Anh bagged up a stack of 207,000 – which puts him 13th in the Day 2 pecking order.
China's Yuanning Wu (171,500), and Vietnam's Van Phuong Nguyen (149,400) rounded out the top ten Flight D stacks, with the top ten as follows:

A total of 32 players made the cut for Day 2, with other notables to fight their way through including China's Jin Long Hu (80,500), and Japan's Satoshi Kuriga (55,900).
The Netherland's Martijn Gerrits, the Philippines' Terry Gonzaga, and Vietnam's Minh Tri Phan Huu all joined the action for the last five hands in order to lock up a Day 2 seat, and the trio will be coming in with the 40,000 starting stack.

While there were 238 survivors from the respective opening flights – 49 from Flight A, 91 from Flight B, 66 from Fllight C, and 32 from Flight D – two players qualified twice; Australia's Phat Thanh Nguyen and the UK's Tan Luan Le.
Both of these players will bring their best stack forward, meaning a total of 236 players will be returning to action for Day 2.

However, with registration remaining open until 12pm when the tournament restarts on Thursday, June 1, this figure may well increase.

China's Xiaosheng Zheng Wins 117-Strong Event #27 Single Day High Roller – 8 Max For VND 1.28 BN (~USD $54.9K)
China's Xiaosheng Zheng claimed a career second-best score and his second APT title in Event #27 Single Day High Roller - 8 Max
Outside of the Main Event, it was the VND 50,000,000 Event #27 Single Day High Roller - 8 Max that was the biggest draw of the day, attracting 117 entries (94 unique).
This saw some of the Asia-Pacific's top players battling it out at the baize for a sizable VND 5,107,050,000 (~USD $218,500) prize pool.
Notables in the running included bracelet winners Abhinav Iyer and Alex Lindop, South Korea's Gab Yong Kim, two-time Main Event champion Lester Edoc, the Philippines' David Erquiaga, the Netherlands Martijn Gerrits, and a whole host of others.
It took twenty-eight 30-minute levels to find a champion, with China's Xiaosheng Zheng the man to claim the crown and the coveted golden lion silhouette trophy, defeating India's Nishant Sharma after a lengthy two-level long heads-up battle.
It came down to a coin flip to decide the winner, with Sharma's ace-king racing against Zheng's pocket threes, with the pair holding to earn Zheng a career second-best score.
Zheng claimed a VND 1,284,920,000 (~USD $55,000) top prize for his victory, earning his second APT title in the process.
Sharma, who was hunting for his maiden APT title, was forced to settle for the VND 868,200,000 (~USD $37,150) on offer for second place.
Vietnam's Van Tan Dong rounded out the winner's podium, taking VND 564,330,000 (~USD $24,150) for third, with the final table paying out as follows:

Singapore's Corine Shi claimed her maiden APT title in Event #26 Women's Event
The VND 5,000,000 Event #26 Women's Event saw 46 ladies in action (31 unique), all competing for a VND 200,790,000 (~USD $8,600) prize pool.
It was Singapore's Corine Shi who took it down, defeating Vietnam's Thuy Hong Nguyen heads-up to claim the VND 68,260,000 (~USD $2,920) top prize.
It proved to be the third time's the charm for Shi. The Singaporean followed up her third-place finish in Event #9 Sunday Super Stack and eighth-place finish in Event #22 Freezeout by claiming her maiden APT title.
Nguyen, who was also on the hunt for her first title, took VND 47,190,000 (~USD $2,015) for second, with Japan's Haruna Fujita receiving VND 30,120,000 (~USD $1,290) for third.

South Korea's Jae Kyung Sim claimed an impressive seventh APT title in Event #28 PLO
The first of the Omaha tournaments to play out was the VND 8,000,000 Event #28 Pot Limit Omaha High, which saw a field of 49 entries (36 unique) fighting it out for a share of the VND 342,216,000 (~USD $14,615) prize pool.
The man to emerge victorious is no stranger to success at the APT, with South Korea's Jae Kyung 'Simba' Sim claiming an impressive seventh APT title after defeating Japan's Akihito Matsuda to take the VND 107,806,000 (~USD $4,615) top prize.
Matsuda received VND 77,850,000 (~USD $3,325) for his runner-up finish.
Australia's Armon Van Wijk made his fourth final table appearance of the Series and claimed his fifth cash, rounding out the winner's podium and taking VND 49,620,000 (~USD $2,125) for third.
The Philippines' Terry Gonzaga, who was on the hunt for a second Omaha title of the Series, finished fourth for VND 37,640,000 (~USD $1,600).

The Philippines David Erquiaga claimed his fourth APT title in Event #24 Turbo - 8 Max
The VND 15,000,000 Event #24 Turbo - 8 Max played out in the early hours of Wednesday morning, drawing 62 entries (50 unique) and generating a VND 811,890,000 (~USD $34,680) prize pool.
It was APT regular David Erquiaga the man to take it down, defeating Vietnam's Gia Trung Nguyen heads-up to claim his fourth APT title and the VND 236,670,000 (~USD $10,140) top prize.
This victory brings Erquiaga close to seven figures in career live tournament winnings, with the Filipino professional sitting just shy of USD $1M. Another deep run in any of the 22 remaining events left to play out will see Erquiaga crack that monumental milestone.

Another newly minted APT champion has been crowned, with China's Xin Yuan claiming his maiden APT title in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the VND 5,000,000 Event #25 NLH - Win the Button - Turbo.
Yuan triumphed over a 74-strong field comprised of 59 unique entries, defeating Vietnam's Van An Chu heads-up to claim the VND 88,820,000 (~USD $3,800) top prize.
