HANOI, VIETNAM, May 30, 2023 – Temperatures rise at the APT Summer Series Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 with the Australian's thriving in the hot conditions – topping Flight B of the Main Event and claiming victory in the richest-ever Superstar Challenge

Playing out at the tournament tables of the Grand Loyal Poker Club – located on the second and third floors of the luxurious Grand Vista Hanoi Hotel – Flight B of the Main Event drew 202 entries (159 unique), bringing the total field up to 345 and the prize pool up to VND 10,541,475,000 – with Flights C & D still left to play out.

It was Australia's Leo Kamiya the man to bag biggest after the ten 45-minute levels played out. Kamiya – who claimed his maiden APT title at the recent APT Taipei – finished atop the counts with a stack of 295,000.

Vietnam's Viet Van Nguyen was not far behind, concluding play with 257,200 in chips, with Malaysia's Hsien Ren Koh finishing with the third largest stack of 239,700.

Russia's Fedor Dedelov (212,700), and Vietnam's Quang Huy Dinh (205,500) rounded out the top five, with India's Kunal Patni (193,100) also making a top ten stack:

A total of 91 players successfully circumnavigated the tournament minefield, with other notables to make it through including India's Zarvan Tumboli (131,300), Malaysia's Shung Er Sua (99,800), Australia's Anton Lu (86,200), the Philippines' David Erquiaga (83,300), and former Main Event champion Feng Zhao (39,300).

Reigning APT Incheon Main Event champion Farhad Aghayev also made the cut, albeit as one of the shortest stacks with 32,500.

The 91 survivors will unite with the 49 Flight A survivors for Day 2 on Thursday, June 1.

With two more starting flights left to play out, there are still opportunities for those unsuccessful in their endeavors to win their way through.

The final two starting Flights C & D – both boasting 30-minute levels – get underway on Wednesday, May 31 at 12pm and 6pm respectively.

Australia's Alan Pham Crushes Richest-ever Superstar Challenge

While the action was playing out in Flight B of the Main Event, some of the Asia-Pacific's best were doing battle in the VND 150,000,000 Event #21 Superstar Challenge.

Boasting the biggest buy-in out of the 43-event schedule – coming in at ~USD $6,400 – the tournament attracted the cream of the Asian poker scene.

A total of 43 entries (35 unique) fought it out at the felt, making it the second largest Superstar Challenge in terms of player numbers, and the richest in terms of prize pool – boasting a VND 5,839,400,000 (~USD $248,700) purse.

Notables in the running included two-time APT Main Event champion Lester Edoc, South Korea's #2 ranked tournament player Gab Yong Kim, bracelet winners Alex Lindop, and Abhinav Iyer, Event #16 Single Day High Roller champion Jun Hao Wu, and Australia's Josh Mccully to name but a few.

It took twenty-two 30-minute levels to crown a champion, with Australia's Alan Pham the man to achieve superstar status.

Pham came into the nine-handed final table with a lead he would not relinquish after finding himself in the dream spot of holding pocket aces against two players holding pocket kings, with that monster pot shooting him to the top of the chip counts.

The final table was a lightning-fast affair that was all wrapped up in an hour, with the Aussie crushing all opposition – eliminating five of the final nine players on his way to claiming his maiden tournament title.

Heads-up was over in five hands, with Pham defeating Quan Qiu to claim the VND 1,985,390,000 (~USD $84,640 top prize.

Qiu collected VND 1,372,260,000 (~USD $58,500) for his runner-up finish, with compatriot Yingrui Ge rounding out the winner's podium and taking VND 875,910,000 (~USD $37,340) for third.

New Zealand's Daniel Francis Ices Event #22 Freezeout for VND 228M (~USD $9.8K)

It proved to be a stellar day at the poker tables for the Antipodeans, with New Zealand's Daniel Francis claiming his maiden APT title in the VND 10,000,000 Event #22 Freezeout.

The action kicked off at 1pm local time, with the tournament attracting a 121-strong field, who fought it out at the felt for a VND 1,056,330,000 (~USD $45,030) prize pool.

It took twenty-seven 25-minute levels for Francis to take the trophy, title and a top prize of VND 228,235,000 (~USD $9,800) after cutting an ICM chip chop deal with heads-up opponent Haiyang Yang, with the Chinese player locking up VND 217,135,000 (~USD $9,300) for his second place finish.

France's Adrien Tantaro took bronze and VND 116,720,000 (~USD $5,000) for third place.

A total of 17 players made the money, with the final table paying out as follows:

Japan's Satoshi Kuriga Seals Fourth APT Title Win in Event #19 NLH - Short Deck - Turbo - 6 Max

The VND 12,000,000 Event #19: NLH - Short Deck - Turbo - 6 Max played out in the early hours of Tuesday morning and attracted a 34-strong field (22 unique).

Short deck events are always action-packed, and with VND 356,184,000 (~USD $15,240) in the prize pool and a coveted APT golden baby lion side event trophy on the line, this one was no exception, with the tournament wrapped up in twenty-one 15-minute levels.

It was Japan's Satoshi Kuriga the man to prove his Short Deck credentials, defeating Australia's Armon Van Wijk heads-up to claim a top prize of VND 100,594,000 (~USD $4,315) after the final three players cut a three-way deal.

This deal saw Van Wijk lock up VND 87,700,000 (~USD $3,730), with South Korea's Seongsu Kong receiving a guaranteed payout of VND 92,200,000 (~USD $3,930), with the trio then playing it out for the title, trophy and a further VND 10,694,000 in cash.

Kong crashed out in third place, and while Van Wijk – who was making his second final table appearence and third cash of the Series – came agonisingly close to claiming a second Series title, it was Kuriga the man to claim the crown and his fourth APT title.

Another of the APT Summer Series Hanoi, Vietnam's side events to play out in the early hours of Tuesday morning was the VND 5,000,000 Event #20 NLH / PLO - Turbo - 8 Max.

This saw 29 entries (27 unique) showcase their mixed-game skills over seventeen 15-minute levels, with South Korea's Hyunkyou Park proving to be the tournament top dog and taking the VND 46,835,000 (~USD $2,000) top prize.

Park bested Evgenii Chernyi to claim his maiden APT title, with the Russian receiving VND 32,280,000 (~USD $1,400) for his runner-up finish.

It was another Russian player – Konstantin Generalov – who locked up third place, earning VND 20,570,000 (~USD $880) in the process.
